Echo: Frankie and Mike

1)The three sisters had an prophecy which they spoke for all who used the harmonica:

Your fate is not yet sealed,
Even in the darkest night, a star will shine,
A bell will chime, a path will be revealed.

Tell what you think each line means for Friedric now that he has been caught on the train and is in the custody of the Nazis.

Write each sentence out and underneath, write your interpretation of what you think it means for Friedrich.

2)In part two of Echo, the harmonica has passed to Mike Flannery in Pennsylvania.  The economy is in the depths of the Great Depression, and Mike, 11 years old and almost six feet tall, lives in the Bishop’s Home for Friendless and Destitute Children with his younger brother, Frankie.  How are the lives of Mike and Frankie similar to Friedrich's life? (3 or more sentences).

They were both not in the best situations and could be a lot better for them. They both could be really good at music if they wanted because they have the talent too. They both dont have a lot of other family.

  8. Your fate is not yet sealed,
Even in the darkest night, a star will shine,
A bell will chime, a path will be revealed.

I think the prophecy means for friedrich that he still has a future, his father is in the darkest night, he will be the star that will reveal the path for himself, his dad and uncle.

The similarity is that they are all imprisoned.
They both have at least one family member to take care of.
They are missing parts of their family.
The harmonica was and is in their possession.
They are all in depression or troubled.

Even in the darkest night, a star will shine, I think that means in the darkest times there still will be at least something good.
A bell will chime, a path will be revealed. I think that means something good will happen at bad times and it will be really good after that.
    2. I think the lives are similar because they both have someone that cares for them. I think another thing would be is they are going to get or already have harmonicas. One last thing would be they both are not cared about as much by other people.

For Even in the darkest night, a star will shine means you're unique in your own way and you're different in a good way. For A bell will chime, a path will be revealed, means you're destiny has came to you in my opinion.

  15. I think it means that u do decide your own future.
To not to let others to decide it for you.
Well i think that friedrich’s life is worse. I think that’s mike and frankie’s life is better because they were living at the adoption centre and finally got adopted. The reason i think that Mike and frankie’s life is better is because they both wanted to be adopted together and to live in the same place together.

  16. 1. I think that the first sentence which is “your fate is not yet sealed” means that Friedrich's fate could change. But I also think that his fate will change when even on the darkest night a star will shine, and a bell will chime. The sentence “Even on the darkest night, a star will shine, a bell will chime, a path will be revealed,” means that when the star shines, and the bell chimes his path will be revealed and he will find a way to escape the Nazis, therefore his fate will change.

    2. Mike and Frankie’s life is similar to Friedrich’s because they are both going through tough times. Both of them also have great interests in music.

  17. 1)I think “Your fate is not yet sealed’”means that things will turn out fine. “Even in the darkest night, a star will shine“ means that even when bad things are happening, something good will happen. “A bell will chime, a path will be revealed” means that he would find a way out of a bad situation.
2)Mike and Frankie’s life is similar to Friedrich's life because they have no mothers. Also, they are very musical. They went/are going through a tough time in their lifes.

  18. Friedric
I think he thinks it means that even though he and his dad where taken by the Natzis, their life will get better soon and they will escape eventually. Even if they are in a really scary and dark position, alight will shine and a path to happiness will be revealed eventually.
Your fate is not yet sealed,
Even in the darkest night, a star will shine,
A bell will chime, a path will be revealed.

    Frankie and Mike

Frankie and Mike’s life are a little like Friedric’s because they both don't have a mother. They also have the Great Depression and Friedric had Hitler and the Natzis. Mike and Frankie got treated differently because of the way the dress and look, and Friedric was treated differently by the way he looked because of his birthmark.

  19. For the sentence ‘‘Your fate is not yet sealed’’ i think it means for Friedric is that there will be more in his journey to save his dad. For ‘ ‘‘Even in the darkest night, a star will shine’’ maybe it mean that in the night you should have hope for the future. For ‘‘A bell will crime, a path will be revealed’’ it means that one day it will be time to release his dad and go to keep going with his journey with part of his family.
Mike and frankies live almost the same to Friedrich life because in The Great Depression people lost jobs and had less food to eat and in Fredrich life it was hard to because the same thing happen people lost everything they had to live but in both stories they both lost their parents.

  20. 1.“Your fate is not yet sealed” This means that it doesn't matter what has happened in his past he can still change his future and nothing will happen for sure. “ Even in the darkest night, a star will shine” I think that they are saying to look for the good/light in the situation. It is also saying that even in the hardest times you can get through it and things will get better. “ A bell will chime and a path will be releveled” This could mean that he has to keep going look for a different route to take.

2.Mike and frankie’s lives are somewhat the same to Friedric because they both share the same love for music. Both the boys and Friedric have faced challenges in their lives that evolved losing family. They both have to move on from hard times for Friedric it was when he had to stay with his uncle because his father was turned over the Nazis. For Mike and Frankie it was when they had to go from their grandmothers to the orphanage.
