Echo - Exclusion vs Inclusion

Image result for Jewish survivors
The Nazis forced Jewish children to display the Star of David on their jackets.  Why would this be considered inappropriate today?  What consequences could these children face in their everyday lives?

Background: In Echo we've read that the Nazis believed that people who didn't have mostly pure German ancestry, Jews, people with disabilities, deformities or even visible birthmarks were not welcome.  They imprisoned, murdered or sterilized many people so they couldn't reproduce.  The Nazis argued that allowing these people to surive weakened the German race and put an unfair burden on taxpayers to look after.

Questions:

1) Friedrich, Mike and Frankie are all made to feel inadequate and were excluded by other people in their societies. Do you think they would be treated differently in today’s world? Why or why not?

2) What experiences, presentations, education or examples have you received, learned or witnessed in your life that have opened your minds and eyes to how different it is for us compared to 90 years ago?

3) Are we there yet?  Are there still examples of exclusion, bullying and or a lack of tolerance in our society/community today?

  2. #1 I think that today’s culture will allow those who looks ragged in stores but if they started to do some suspicious things then they may be questioned.
#2 I know that the people 90 years ago suffered a lot by losing family members and affording their daily life needs because of the wars and since there aren't any advanced technologies at that time, most things are handmade which will cost more manwork and also be more expensive in markets.
#3 There are still some lack of tolerance now about culture like rasiscism.

  3. I think they would be treated today because Hitler is not ruling anymore. I think another reason would be because now we think differently about people because we know more about them. I think one reason they would be treated the same would be because we still look at people like this the same way we just act differently now.
One experience is all the books Mr.Nixon reads to us really open my eyes even more. I think another experience is watching videos on them and seeing what it was really like for them 90 years ago. One more way I learned was from school and how they teach us about history and how things in the past were good and bad.
I think we are not there yet but we are close. I think one reason we are not there yet would be because there is still bullying at school and exclusion between people. Another reason would be lots of people look at homeless or people with no money oddly or weirdly and if you go somewhere fancy they will think you do not have enough money to be there.

  4. Yes and no because even though this time we are more open and understanding there are just people who dont think its right and wil just not take them in as the same because of their differences and that's why they would and would not be accepted.
T.v the internet and school those are all of the things that opened my eyes and how things are different and the change that has happened was not like it was, many things changed then it was t 90 years ago like when this story takes place.
No we are not there yet we are same what close from it but there is still bullying exclusion and tolerance can be lacking in other things because of all of this is why I think we are not there yet but we are in the middle.

Well yes i think that they are going to get accepted to the society because there threats are gone. One i have a friend that has a large birthmark on his face. Some people will be mean to them but not as much.
My life has been a bumpy life so far so i can understand what they feel like. My great great grandfather was in world war 2. And what i have learned about hitler, life back then was bad
No, were not in a perfect world where everyone is nice and trustworthy. And we will never be perfect. Maybe if we didn't have wars the world would be perfect .

  6. 1#I think that they would be treated differently today because this world is now more modern and kind than the past. Because in Frederics case, many people have epilepsy and birth marks and Hitler is no longer around(Thank goodness). And for Frankie and Mike, again there are many adopted kids around the world so they shouldn't feel excluded, same with poor people or people that have lost many or a loved one.

2#The education that I have witnessed is when I went to the Nanaimo museum in downtown. I learned so much about our ancestors and the aboriginal people that were there before them. And to think that there was no such thing as technology, fast food, arcades or any of the things that we have now is amazing.

3#In my opinion, we aren't even close. The few examples of lack of tolerance and exclusion is making all aboriginal or native citizens live in basically a whole new community. Our aboriginal EA has to live in this community. I don’t understand why the government does this but I find it silly. It now may be harder for new canadian citizens that are aboriginal find homes because i'm guessing that there isn't always space in the native/aboriginal communities. We are all humans. We all have feelings. We all have a beating heart. We all have rights.

Now people have Yes there is still discrimination about race, culture and sexism. There discrimation in so many countries..

  8. 1}I think they would because it is in 19s and 18s century and the people always change in every part of the world and some never change so i think they should because the war is going and there wouldn’t be any explosions.
2] That in some parts of the world it is different and 90 years ago was different as i said some people change they never be mean and i have seen many people die on the news and it is said because something when they don’t even notice.
3]yes there is in our society because most happen when they don't it did like dying.

  9. 1)Most people would treat them the same way but some people might not. Some people don’t accept other people who are different. But most people would except them.

2)The poor can become rich and orphanages treat the kids well. We are much more accepting and have rules to protect against dictatorship. It is also illegal to sell kids and to put people in prison for their religion.

3)almost, some people have some very strong opinions and stereotypes. Some people are stubborn and want to stick to their ways of thinking. Someday we might get there but right now we are not there.

  10. 1. I think they would be treated differently in today’s society because most of today’s kids are more kind and welcoming.
    2. I have learned what it was like 90 years ago by watching movies that were set in that period of time.

  11. I do think that they would be treated differently in today’s world because time has changed and so have manners and rules.
Because for example mike and frankie went to a expensive store and the people who worked their thought they were going to steal some clothes just because they weren't dressed properly . But these days they would be treated with respect even if they are dressed in dirty clothing.
Just this day is the modern day, their is some lack of bullying going around in the world somewhere.

  12. I think they would get treated different but in a good way because I feel people these days are a little nicer then back then. And there are probably more people with a birthmark like Friedrich so nobody can really say anything. I know that if I knew them I would have been friends with them right away!

    2. I've noticed people with disabilities are more noticed and included then they were back then. And people pay more attention to them and give them the help that they need! Which is amazing and how much we have increased is awesome! People are starting to notice the change and trying to make everything better but if you think about actually you probably don't even have to think about it there are people that changed the world not just by themselves but there are people that helped out a lot. But if there were not those people in the world the world would still be the same as 90 years ago.[sadly].

    3. There definitely is still quite a bit of bullying but i also feel like bullying was way more harsh then it is now only because parents and adults were bullys to i feel like kids is orphans need to be treated better like they are your kids there should not be any favorites and no bullying so if you think about it you would be bullying them and being rude but when they get adopted they will tell everybody everything and that orphanage will be shut down

I think they were treated differently because of the way they looked and dressed because people really cared if other people were perfect because they wanted the world to have perfect people and perfect things.

It is very different for us now because money use to be worth so much more and now what use to be 10 cents for a loaf of bread is now like 4.00 for one loaf of bread. We have electronics and tv but back then the kids had to do lots of hard chores and they played outside with sticks and rocks instead.

We are not there yet because we still have exclusion, bullying and lack of tolerance because we can’t ever be perfect because that's just not possible. I think life right now is pretty great now though.

  14. Yes Friedrick and Mike and Frankie would be treated differently. They would be treated differently because they would go to the same school as us and they would be allowed to have kids and they would not be killed. They would be treated nicely and be accepted.
I have realized how different it is now then 90 years ago because back in the old days. People got killed if they were special or believed in a surrten religion. And if they had a surrten colour skin.
No we are not there yet people in 2018 are still getting bullied. People are getting bullied all over world even in canada. Even at school there is exclusion. Say to people wanted to hangout with each other and another, person asked if they could hangout, with them and they said no that exclusion. So there is still exclusion in this world today it happens everyday. brooklyn
