Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve

Pick two of these quotes and explain what they tell you about the society that Tom lives in.  What does each quote you've chosen tell you about Tom's London?  Each answer must be at least three sentences long, contain one dressup each and give your opinions backed up with facts that we have heard from the story.  Remember:
Draft your answers in Google Docs or MS WORD. Edit them for clarity and details; use Google Read and Write or Word Talk to PROOF READ them for COPS before copying them into the blog editor and posting them. Don't forget your first name on your post.

"The lower levels wreathed in engine smoke, the villas of the rich gleaming white on the higher decks."

"The Ancients destroyed themselves in that terrible flurry of orbit-to-earth atomics and tailored-virus bombs called the Sixty Minute War."

"Tom could not get at him, because Melliphant's family had paid to make him a First Class Apprentice, while Tom, who had no family, was a mere Third."

"Tom cut through the Twenty-First Century gallery, past the big plastic statues of Pluto and Mickey, animal-headed gods of lost America."

"Mr. Valentine! Look! A seedy!"

"The people of the old days may only have lived in static settlements, but their electronic machines were far beyond anything London's Engineers have been able to build."

  1. I believe that this answer tells us that the world was destroyed by the cold, violent Sixty minute war. The tailored-virus bombs probably gave illness to many people and later died of the reactions. Also that most the world that destroyed so not much resources were probably destroyed.

This answer tells us that Tom lost his parents and couldn’t pay. So he got mad at Melliphant because he was talking about Tom’s parents and punched him. So he was didn’t have anywhere to go.

This tells me why tom and people live in traction cities because all the things on ground were destroyed by the bombs that they all fired, so there aren’t any thing to live on the ground.

    "Mr. Valentine! Look! A seedy!"
This tells me that the things from before the bombs were forgotten and they do not know the real meaning or names of those things.

    “Mr. Valentine! Look! A seedy!”
It tells me that they don’t know what a CD is because they called it a seedy. They don’t know what satisfying, awesome objects we had or what we called them. It tells you that they live in the future for us as we live in the past for them.

“Tom cut through the Twenty-First Century gallery, past the big plastic statues of Pluto and Mickey, animal-headed gods of lost America.”
It tells you that the amazingly jumpy Pluto and Mickey, who are from Disney Land and from a T.V. , are not familiar to London. They have a gallery of the things we have now just like we have a gallery of the things 100 years ago. It also tells you that some people think that Pluto and Mickey are gods and the call America “Lost America”.

  6. Well the first quote explains that the society they live in is a chaotic one because the ancient#us killed each other thus leaving the ones who got left behind to scramble and take out others so we can get to the top, which left everyone else panicking and riley on their leaders,so they can escape the grasp of other towns.
Also they live in a society where they don’t know anything about us they assume they know some what about which most of their is probably wrong info is wrong because one big thing they got wrong was that they thought that pluto and mickey mouse are gods that we worshiped and that disney land was their shrines. The evidence for the first quotes was that they are in the land where we killed each other and the are fighting for top spot so they don't get devoured by other towns and our modern towns don’t exist, and the second quote they don’t know much about us so they assume much like we are doing now with even achiest stuff from our past which we sometimes have a hard time understanding.

  7. Tom cut through the Twenty-First Century gallery, past the big plastic statues of Pluto and Mickey, animal-headed gods of lost America."
It tells me that the society Tom survived in didn’t know that Pluto and Mickey were just cartoon characters and not animal-headed gods. They probably thought this because they probably found lots of toys and other items that looked like Pluto and Mickey. It also tells me that they don’t know everything about the Twenty-First Century.

    "Mr. Valentine! Look! A seedy!"
It tells me that the society that Tom lives in is in the future. It tells me the technology they use might be more advanced or less advanced. It also tells me that a “seedy” is kinda rare because Tom seems excited that he found a “seedy”.

    Mr.Valentine! Look! A seedy!
I think that Tom's society speak different than people that speak english.
They use different words than we would use for different items. Such as pants they call them trousers and cd’s they call them seedy.
    My second one is
"The Ancients destroyed themselves in that terrible flurry of orbit-to-earth atomics and tailored-virus bombs called the Sixty Minute War." This tells me that people who live in traction cities live there because of all the ground got destroyed by bombs. Rylan

  9. "Tom could not get at him, because Melliphant's family had paid to make him a First Class Apprentice, while Tom, who had no family, was a mere Third."

That tells me that London's government is corrupt and greedy because you can buy your way top the top.

"Tom cut through the Twenty-First Century gallery, past the big plastic statues of Pluto and Mickey, animal-headed gods of lost America."

That tells me that they don't know anything about us as they think we worshiped disney.

  10. "Tom could not get at him, because Melliphant's family had paid to make him a First Class Apprentice, while Tom, who had no family, was a mere Third." This quote proves that everything there is corrupt because you can pay your way up.
"Tom cut through the Twenty-First Century gallery, past the big plastic statues of Pluto and Mickey, animal-headed gods of lost America." This quote, which mr. Nixon made, means that people probably saw all of those statues and thought they were gods

  12. "The people of the old days may only have lived in static settlements, but their electronic machines were far beyond anything London's Engineers have been able to build." as this story is set in the future, it is meant to be the past. Since things such as CDs are so rare. One day it's will be like today
"The Ancients destroyed themselves in that terrible flurry of orbit-to-earth atomics and tailored-virus bombs called the Sixty Minute War."The Soviet Union of Russia (USSR) starting the race for nuclear weapons with the US. ...
    United States of America. ...
    France. ...
    China. ...
    United Kingdom. ...
    Pakistan. ...
    India. ...
    Israel.
These are some of the most powerful countries (nukes). If this war ever happens we would end up as the same idea because the only resources will have are the ones that we built with. As well i hope this never happens.

  13. Mr.Valentine! Look! Seedy!
I found out about the seedy which means CD. They probably did not know how to spell it back then.
"The Ancients destroyed themselves in that terrible flurry of orbit-to-earth atomics and tailored-virus bombs called the Sixty Minute War."
This tells me why they live in the t cities.

I found out a seedy where Tom live in the future is different because over here a CD is not very important but in the future t is different over in the future they think that it is very important that they found that.
Tom cut through the Twenty-First Century gallery, past the big plastic statues of Pluto and Mickey, animal-headed gods of lost America."

  15. "Tom cut through the Twenty-First Century gallery, past the big plastic statues of Pluto and Mickey, animal-headed gods of lost America."I think that London thinks that they should respect these gods that are really just cartoon characters from Disney."The people of the old days may only have lived in static settlements, but their electronic machines were far beyond anything London's Engineers have been able to build."What I think that they mean by that is that we used to live in just a city in a country that stays still and then they built literally walking cities and countries.

  16. "The lower levels wreathed in engine smoke, the villas of the rich gleaming white on the higher decks." This quote tells us that London is split into to groups; the poor and the rich. The poor has to live in smoke, while the rich or wealthy live in the higher tears. I don’t think anybody cares about the people that live in the smoke because most of them are convicts that have done something bad enough to deserve it.
"Tom cut through the Twenty-First Century gallery, past the big plastic statues of Pluto and Mickey, animal-headed gods of lost America." This quote tells us that they thought Pluto and Mickey Mouse from Disneyland and Disneyworld were gods because they discovered the theme parks that had them all over the place. It also tells that they might think that people used to worship them at these theme parks. I think that they might not know about all the other Disney characters, and if they find them they might think that they are also gods.

  17. "The Ancients destroyed themselves in that terrible flurry of orbit-to-earth atomics and tailored-virus bombs called the Sixty Minute War."

I think they’re talking about a giant nuclear war that happened somewhere a long time ago before the events of Mortal Engines. I think it was called the Sixty Minute War because the war lasted about an hour from all the nuclear bombs and tailored-virus bombs detonating, as it was what Tom said. The Ancients could’ve been humans from a thousand years ago in Tom’s time or a million years ahead in our time!

"Tom cut through the Twenty-First Century gallery, past the big plastic statues of Pluto and Mickey, animal-headed gods of lost America."

I think they’re talking about the big statues in Disneyland in the US (or Disneyworld). Since they don’t know about Disney and all these characters, I think they tried to come up with an explanation that these people of lost America worshipped these gods with heads of super-deformed animals. I think it makes sense that they’d be treated as gods and Walt Disney as “the One Creator” since Pluto and Mickey made a huge impact on the world in the 20th and 21st century.

  18. "Mr. Valentine! Look! A seedy!" this tells me that CD's are not found often because Tom seems very happy to have found it. Also the fact he spells/pronounces it “seedy” shows that he isn’t very familiar with CD's.
"Tom cut through the Twenty-First Century gallery, past the big plastic statues of Pluto and Mickey, animal-headed gods of lost America." This quote from the book is showing that they don't know a lot about the twenty first century. They don't know that Pluto and mickey are cartoon characters from Disney not animal-headed gods of lost america for them to worship.
